Snowy egret feasting on a sand crab
I was pleasantly surprised to discover that a snowy egrets had taken up feasting on sand crabs near the Santa Monica pier, in California. When a wave washes over shore then starts to recede, the little bubbles in the sand are where the sand crabs are burrowing. This egret was a master sand crab hunter, as he successfully demonstrated in this photo, with a sand crab in his beak. (His beak, incidentally, is perfectly designed for this type of operation). While the egret feasted on sand crabs, kids played in the waves and the ferris wheel loomed over us all. It appears this snowy egret has adapted to city life.
