Songsarek Tribe

The Garo tribe is one of the indigenous tribes in the northeastern state of Meghalaya, India. They are part of the larger Bodo-Kachari group of ethnic communities and primarily inhabit the Garo Hills region, which spans the western part of Meghalaya. The Garo people are known for their distinct culture, language, and traditions. Conversion to Christianity in the Garo Hills region of Meghalaya began in the 2nd half of the 19th century. I minority of the villagers practice Songsarek, the pre Christian religion and they live along side Christianized villages. Songsarek ceremonies are based on a cycle the depends on slash and burn agriculture system.
