Spanish Period Tower in New Mexico
This is a tower, built as part of a rancho style house in the 1700s on the Camino Real, the Spanish royal road that linked Mexico and New Mexico. It was a paraje or an official rest stop for travelers on the Camino Real. This tower, along with others in around the ranch were built as lookouts and defensive positions to protect the travelers and residents from native attacks.
