23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Wildlife
Special Treat

I spent four weeks photographing little owls; the first half of the time they were incubating, and the second half they were already feeding their chicks. In the first two weeks, I only saw the female twice, in the second two weeks once or twice a day. As the female was almost constantly in the hole, the male would appear the day after the hatching with large voles and lizards, which his mate would chop up into edible pieces for the chicks. One day, after a long wait, he arrived with some very large, hard-to-identify prey. As I was concentrating on taking photos during the scene, which lasted only a few seconds, I only realized after the pictures were taken that he was holding the head of a hare in his beak. I have been following owls in an area densely populated by hares for ten years, but I have never had information on such prey.
