17th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Spectacular Views from Dry Tortugas National Park
This photo was taken while facing southwest in direction at Dry Tortugas National Park. Also known as Fort Jefferson, it is seemingly "forgotten" out in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, specifically located in the Straits of Florida. It's about 70 miles off of Key West and is one of the most remote national parks in the country; the most remote in the continental 48. My husband and I are National Park junkies and we visited during our honeymoon to the Florida Keys this past April 2019. Visiting DTNP was a trip of a lifetime, it's absolutely breathtaking and surreal. A true gem not many people get to witness.
