17th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Spectators enjoying 4th of July fireworks over Brooklyn.

In a state where fireworks are deemed illegal, every year on July 4th, New York City becomes lit up with the sights and sounds of fireworks regardless. The sheer volume of the spectacle that takes place in the five-boroughs--whether by professional pyrotechnic companies or by friends and families celebrating--serves as a reminder that no matter our origins on this day we stand in solidarity as Americans. Thousands of onlookers gather across rooftops in NYC to marvel at the beauty unfolding. Though, the true beauty is that the viewing is an unbreakable moment of unity as New Yorkers and as Americans.
