13th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
American square dance

American square dancing is an institution. Immigrants from around the world came to the United States, bringing with them their native folk dances. As communities grew and people gathered at the end of a hard week, they would sing and dance. Given the diverse backgrounds, they needed song and dance everyone could follow together. One person would create the dance moves and teach them to others, they could be complex and elected to have a caller announce the dance moves to guild the dance.
