22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Artistic
Staircase in winter "fog"

A friend had recently lent me his DSLR camera for me to re-learn old-forgotten tricks of the real thing. I'm partial to the convenience of my iPhone ("the best camera is what you have with you" etc)so was reluctant to return to the fiendish complexity of f-stops and ISOs of my university days. But here I was returning to my new flat after wandering the local markets on a crisp, sunny January morning, lugging this new, heavy machinery around my shoulder looking for inspiration. Entering my building, the afternoon light falling on the staircase had a soft, melancholic quality to it that needed capturing. Upon turning on my camera, I realised the lenses had fogged up after coming in from the cold. JACKPOT! Stairs, moody lighting, fog, geometric lines - all my obsessions in one shot!
