18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Altered Images
Staircase to the Ocean

Along the beaches of Recife, Brazil, staircases lead down ocean retaining walls to provide beach access. At low tide, the beach is busy with people. At high tide, the beach disappear. The only glimpse of it is when crashing waves briefly retreat, before the next one comes in.
