This is the trunk of a dead Torrey Pine tree. The Torrey Pine is a rare and endangered species that is found in only a few places, one being semi-arid coastal San Diego County. Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, a California state park, protects and preserves the largest collection of these pine trees.
