13th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Stars and stripes on the Spiegel Grove

The American flag on the Spiegel Grove, to me, is always a spectacular site. It was one of the highlights of dive and the current was moving just enough to provide a slow wave of the flag. The Spiegel Grove is a 510 foot ship that was purposely sunk as part of an artificial reef system in south Florida. The sinking of the ship is a tale in itself. When it was sunk, the ship accidentally fell over on its side. There was great effort to upright the ship, but all human efforts failed, and it took mother nature to finish the job with Hurricane Dennis; Hurricane Dennis uprighted the ship and it now sits on its keel. The American flag flies on the Spiegel Grove.
