15th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Statue of a soldier and his shadow at the Albemarle County Courthouse, Charlottesville, Virginia.

A Confederate soldier casts a long shadow on the beautiful old tree behind him. Every year at this time, I’ve watched this shadow come to life. Seems more poignant this year as old bad history is dredged up and made historical again with unnecessary violence. I wonder if the long, sometimes dark, shadow of our country’s veiled history will remain long after the statues are gone.
