Stone Mother

Stone Mother sits beside her basket and watches over Lake Pyramid. The Paiute tribe, whose native reservation protects this sacred formation, has a legend about her; they say she sat so long crying for her exiled children, that her tears created the lake and she then turned to stone. The rocks are tufa, which is made of calcium carbonate that forms at the mouth of springs or lake water. You won't find her on a map, and her location is kept secret by the locals.
