STOP LUMAD KILLINGS

This photo was taken during a mobilization in the University of the Philippines Diliman. The woman in focus is a Lumad. Lumads are indigenous people from Mindanao. They are deprived of basic social services such as health care and education. Because of this, mining companies could easily deceive them. In exchange for canned goods, they trick them into signing papers which states that they are selling their ancestral lands. Eventually, they've built their own schools and started being well-informed and educated. However, the government didn't like the idea of them recognizing their rights. Militarization started to transpire so that mining companies could easily attack the Lumad communities and enter their lands, causing a thousand deaths of their families. This photo shows student-activists, professors, and everyone else standing by the Lumads, rallying against the government to stop Lumad killings, protesting for their rights.
