22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Strolling in White Sands National Park
White Sands National Park, located in New Mexico, USA, is a unique natural attraction known for its vast expanse of white gypsum dunes. The dunes here cover an area of about 275 square miles, making it the largest gypsum desert in the world. Because the dunes are made of gypsum, the sand takes on a pure white color, creating a spectacular sight.
