Stromboli - the Italian Volcano Island

Stromboli Stromboli is one of the most active and visited volcanoes on earth, and because its eruptions can be seen for long distances at night, it is known as the “Light House of the Mediterranean. It has been actively erupting for at least 2,000 years, and is believed to have had its first eruptions long before that. Viewed from offshore it is striking in its abrupt rise from the sea to a height of around 3,000 feet (below the water is another 9,000) and capped by a thick white cloud that rises to what appears to be a couple of thousand feet or more.
