Structured Lake

Industrial evaporation ponds stretch across the southern shore of the Great Salt Lake, their geometric boundaries dividing a wetland that once shifted freely. Decades of water diversions and mineral extraction have lowered the lake to historic levels, concentrating its brine and exposing vast areas of lakebed to dust and salt. Photographed from a small aircraft, the scene shows how the lake’s natural rhythms have been replaced by engineered lines—the visible imprint of declining water levels and the mounting pressure on one of North America’s most important saline ecosystems.
