23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Artistic
Study with Meadow Flowers (Montenero Val Cocchiara / Abruzzi Apennines, June 2024)

Since 2021, I have been working on the portrait series entitled "Blütenporträts" (Bloom Portraits). In the form of photomontages, the images from the series depict the floral peaks of various landscapes and examine what significance nature has for humans and what influence humans have on nature. I am using photographic field research and collage to realistically picture present-day plant worlds, to visually study their life force and biological intelligence. The images are meant to document the state of each flora, visualize its particularities and reveal its morphology, diversity and aesthetics. They shall make plant life processes visible through photography and "help to reconnect with nature (Karl Blossfeldt, 1932, my translation)." To get a feeling for the collected photographic material and the life-size photomontages, I create individual studies. I understand these studies as preparatory works that are intended to convey an idea of the aesthetics of the actual "Blütenporträts," which unite all the motifs respectively. The photographs for this study were captured in June 2024 in the Abruzzi Apennines.
