Summer relief for a Svalbard reindeer
A Svalbard reindeer stands on the lush early summer tundra in Adventdalen, Svalbard, while glaciers in the background provide an icy reminder of the previous months. This male has survived a particularly harsh winter. The combination of winter rainfall freezing to form an impenetrable layer of ice over the tundra, and high population density, resulted in a record number of reindeer succumbing to starvation during the winter. With abundant food in the summer months, the reindeer can now relax and recuperate until the autumn rut and coming winter.
