16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Summer storm over South Mountain

We'd just turned out horses when this storm formed almost out of nowhere. The mountains are notorious for creating almost instantaneous shifts in weather patterns. We watched the storm move off to the north leaving only a gentle rain in its wake.
