Sunlit Monuments

I arrived in monument valley in late afternoon, September 2021. It was a little stormy and after a long drive I wanted to get to my campsite, but I decided to go check out the view inside the park for sunset. I wasn’t sure if I’d make it or what I would see because it was totally overcast, but I figured it was worth a quick look. Just as I got out of the car, and just before the sun fully set, there was a razor-thin break in the cloud layer just few degrees above the horizon, so the sun really lit up the monuments and clouds with a beautiful glow. The angle of the sun also created a shadow from the foreground monument onto the background monument, something that probably only happens during certain times of year when the angle is just right. I highly recommend a visit to Monument Valley. The rock formations are obviously breathtaking, you can tour the park with a native guide, and there are a bunch of places to camp or stay right there in the park or just outside it with a native family on reservation land, which is what we did. The beauty of this place, the majesty of the monuments, and the scale of geological time on display, make this a very special area. And this was even more special because I got engaged while there!
