21st Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Sunrise at Split Apple Rock

This rock formation is a landmark on New Zealand's South Island. I got up when it was still dark and drove my rental car from my bed and breakfast to Abel Tasman National Park and hiked down a densely forested trail in the dark until I came out on this lovely beach just as light in the sky was forming. I was the only one on the beach and it was quiet except for the crickets chirping, and it was a meditative setting I will never forget.
