14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Sunrise from inside Anemone Cave in Acadia National Park

This photo was taken from inside of the anemone cave off of schooner head overlook in Acadia National Park. I actually stumbled upon this cave on accident. After doing some research I found out that this cave, named Anemone Cave, used to be a major attraction in Acadia until they decided to take it off of the maps because of how dangerous it could be. The cave is only accessible at low tide and even then it is very slippery and difficult to get into. After discovering the cave I looked at the tide charts and realized that the next morning would be the only morning where it would be low tide at sunrise. I would only have one shot to get the picture I was looking for.
