22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Sunrise Run

I captured this sunrise image in the Camargue region of Provence, France in June, 2024. Camargue is an area in the southern region of Provence, France along the Mediterranean. It consists primarily of marshes and wetlands from the Rhone River delta. It is famous for its black bulls and all white horses. The horses of Camargue are a traditional French breed of working horse indigenous to the area that live in semi-feral conditions in the marshes. They are smaller horses known for their stamina, agility and hardiness. The horses are born with black/brown hair over black skin, but the hair turns white as they mature. I spent four half-days with a local breeder and some of his horses photographing them at sunrise and sunset on the beach, in the salt flats and in the marsh where they live.
