18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Sunset at the Washington Monument grounds, where 20,000 flags placed to remember COVID-19 victims
A sign sits in the ground at the Washington Monument, where 20,000 flags were placed to represent the American lives lost at the time to COVID-19. The Kickstarter for the DC-based group responsible for the project reads: “This administration has done nothing to memorialize this stunning number of lives lost...No flags lowered, no service held, no day of mourning declared—so the COVID Memorial Project seeks to simply say: these lives are more than a statistic—they were family, friends, neighbors.”
