Photography is the art of writing with light. And the play of light and darkness is what helps elevate a nature picture to art. This picture of a male and female pair of Thomson gazelles had been made at the Masai Mara in October 2018. This had been my fifth trip to that part of the world, with my first photo safari to the Masai Mara having been in 2009. I spent an evening drive trying to execute the silhouette images I had wanted to create. And as the fading light of the setting sun painted magical hues across the endless equatorial skies, I waited for animals to come up across the ridge. When the Tommies did so, it provided me the opportunity to make the pictures I had been seeking.
