Surmi boys gaze through pampas grass

We had driven 14 hours over rough terrain to reach this region. The elevation cooled us for the first time in a week. We were awake at dawn and taken to a river. We were alone until slowly the villagers arrived one by one to perform their daily ritual of face painting and adornment.
