22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Swarming silhouettes
Every evening at dusk, an awe-inspiring natural spectacle unfolds in the dense jungle of the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve on the Yucatán Peninsula. Millions of insect-eating bats stream out from the cave’s lower entrance, spiraling upward in a mesmerizing clockwise formation. As they ascend, they bring fresh air and the scent of the underground with them, creating a sensory experience for sight and smell alike. By controlling insect populations, these bats play a crucial ecological role, helping to maintain balance in the forest ecosystem and protect local vegetation from potential pest outbreaks.
