13th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
Swiftly, but silently a geisha slid down the cedar and paper hallway of a Ryokan on Mt Mitake, Japan. Once numbering 80,000 only 2000 remain today.

Sustainable Travel - can this be so? The process of visiting Mt Mitake, outside of Tokyo is to undertake a sustainable experience. Transportation, accommodations, food + entertainment all consider the natural resources available. Light rail trains, locally sourced + grown kaiseki meals, and baths that borrow from the natural hot springs of the region. It became clear that these were choices not made of sustainable consciousness, but rather, a simple and everyday respect.
