15th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Swimming with Dinosaurs

Loggerhead turtles are striking with their history visible for all to see; shell damage, bumps, barnacles and chronicles all displayed on their back is a wonderful thing to view up close. As I took this image however, I found myself totally lost in the eyes of this ancient reptile. All I could think about was how has this insanely beautiful animal survived everything mankind had put in its path to a 'normal' life. Overfishing, fishing techniques, global warming, pollution (particularly plastics), poaching, habitat destruction, ocean occupants feel an abundance of pressure from our actions. An incredible free dive and exchange of curiosity between diver and turtle, however the real treat was the additional environmental inspiration that came post dive.
