18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Symbols of America
An immature bald eagle adjusts its catch in front of an American flag. This particular catch, a large menhaden, was first the property of an osprey, but the young eagle immediately chased after the osprey, which dropped the fish in the water. The eagle then collected the fish from the surface of the water, flew up a ways, and reposition it for better aerodynamics.
