20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Taking in the scenery at Theodore Roosevelt National Park

The first stop on our 2022 summer road trip was Theodore Roosevelt National Park. We visited the North Unit hoping to avoid the crowds. I'm happy to report that we were successful. At times it felt like we had the whole park to ourselves. I grabbed this photo while the kids were taking in the view at the Oxbow Overlook, looking down at the Little Missouri River valley. This particular road trip would include four more National Parks, covering 6,226 miles. With all of us together, traveling in a minivan, we had many conversations. We talked about the indigenous people and early explorers that traveled over these lands without paved roads and GPS systems. We all agreed that we could not even begin to imagine the challenges that were endured.
