talas snail and lichen

The Sonoran Desert in Arizona is a very inhospitable habitat for snails. one exception to this are a group of talas snails. during the heat of the summer these tiny snails attach themselves to the underside of the talus boulders that dominate their habitat. Here they endure the 120 degree F heat and low humidity. When the infrequent winter rains fall these tiny beasts exit their summer protections and do what snails do, eat, breed, and seemingly just hang out. i photographed this talus snail on a cold (at least for Phoenix, AZ) morning while it was roaming among the moss and lichens of a large volcanic boulder.
