16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Teddy bear cholla
Hiking around Joshua Tree National Park, we came upon a field of cholla cactus, nicknamed teddy bear cholla. So cuddly you could hug them, but don't! I liked the small light flare in the photo, lending a alien-like beam to an alien landscape of prickly characters.
