19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Altered Images
Temple of the Dead
This photo shows the William A. Clark mausoleum (1920) surrounded by a shallow pond in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, Los Angeles. As I roamed the cemetery with my camera, I was taken with this classical revival structure sitting poised and prominent among the surrounding graves and small animals. It appeared like a place of ritual in some bygone age, its reflection in the rippling water, a testimony to the arcane events that took place within.
