As a sign of devotion, during Thaipusam worshipers pierce their faces with sharp, long, spears and walk barefoot for kilometers ending up to the temple atop the hill. As the spear gets removed, this young man starts bleeding copiously, while a fellow devotee helps him by placing ashes on the wounds.
