21st Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
The Acrobat

This photo is from a series of images of a Rhesus Macaque or Rhesus Monkey (Macaca mulatta) baby maneuvering its way down from a tree branch to a small pond in Satchari National Park, Habiganj District, Sylhet Division, Bangladesh to drink water. The Macaque would drink the water hanging from the tree upside down. After drinking it crawls back its way up in the trees. Still not adept yet, the baby is learning its acrobatic moves. During dry season many of the inhabitants of the forest including Rhesus Macaque, Northern Pig-tailed Macaque, Crab-eating Mongoose, Wild boar, Northern Red Muntjac and many bird species come to drink water in this small pond located just a few feet from the highway.
