Cuban communities responded to the food insecurity caused by the American embargo and the collapse of the Soviet Union with the development of its own urban organic farming system. Located right outside of Havana, the Alamar Organic Farm is run by local farmers and scientists who are able to feed the surrounding community with the produce grown on its land. A portion of the food also goes to hotels and is sold in the local province. Alamar has a private business status, something still rare in Cuba, which allows the farm to make its own decisions regarding its economic endeavors and operation procedures. Today, the Alamar farm grows organic lettuce, tomatoes, plantains, mangos and more while also cultivating a strong sense of pride and community through its work.
