15th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
The Aurora Australis

This was my first time capturing the Aurora, I had gone on holiday to Tasmania and planned to try my luck at shooting the lights. I had tried during our stay around the Island but the weather was not kind no clear sky’s for 10 days we had heightened activity during this time and only one night there was a small break in the clouds, did capture a small glow of green but not the best. The next place we stayed was on east cost and there was no mountains to obscure the view to south, on the first night there the sky cleared the Kp index was very high and the solar winds were good I headed out to a spot I had already surveyed during the day because during the night would be difficult to access. I was rewarded with a great show of dancing lights.
