This is a 'Gnat Ogre', Holcocephala fusa, a species of small (a few millimeters) robber fly. This was taken with my cell phone - a Google Pixel 3XL - at the Monocacy Battlefield in Frederick County, Maryland. With the wind blowing and a clip-on macro lens attached, I was fortunate that the specimen decided that this was the moment to hold still for a couple of minutes so I could take pictures. As one of my favorite invertebrates to photograph, I was over the moon to get such a well-composed shot with my cell phone. The best camera isn't always your big DSLR, but whatever you happen to have on you at that moment.
