20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
The Blythe Intaglios

It is such a humbling experience to view these ancient geoglyphs from above. The Blythe Intaglios are located in the Colorado Desert near the town of Blythe, California. A total of six figures, the largest one measures 171 feet (52 meters) and the oldest one dates back about 2,000 years. Although they are now protected by fences, sadly you can spot the damage caused by vehicles.
