15th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Mobile
The bones of a whale lie on black pahoe'hoe lava as the sun sets on Fernandina Island.
Returning from a naturalist-led hike across the pahoe'hoe lava flows of Espinosa, we saw this whale skeleton laid out starkly against the black rock in the red sunset light. Apparently scientists had removed the skull and other bones of interest, but left the spine and some ribs.
