14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
The Canine and the Cross.

I was stopped at a light in Grand Junction, Colorado... I looked over and saw this dog in the back of an old pick-up truck. It was very windy, a summer storm was blowing in, making the hair on the dogs head and ears lightly dance...the clouds were beginning to take over. I looked up and just behind the dog was this push broom standing upside down in a piece of PVC Pipe ...it formed a cross, silhouetted against the afternoon sky just above the dog...The religious symbolism just kind presented itself...I really love the look on the dogs face, perseverance and a sense of duty. Kind of Americana in a nut shell. Dark skies looming...but always a sense of hope. And I love the AutoZone sign in the background...because the dog seems to be in the 'Zone.'
