The cats who rule no man's land

This photo was taken directly on the frontline of the ongoing war in Ukraine. Unaffected by the landmines, bared wire and crossfire cats have found a bizarre home on the frontline. Without failure, every outpost, trench, and FOB had their own friendly "cat of war" – keeping soldiers company throughout the long silences between attacks. If there is any victory force in this gridlocked war it might as well be the army of felines who have taken over no man's land. I have seen soldiers cautiously stepping over cats sprawled out in trenches as they run for cover, and taking breaks mid-firefight to chop up fresh fish. They add a touch of much-needed innocents and carelessness to the frontlines.
