16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
The Chameleon and the Cricket
Chameleons eat like no other animal in the world. Watching the process is both giddily exciting and unbelievably tense - and what makes it even better is that a chameleon is so small, one could miss such a sight in the wild easily. When I saw the tongue of this chameleon shoot out to snatch that cricket, it was akin to seeing my first lightning bolt: a beautiful, incredible moment that only nature could provide. One of many miracles I witnessed during my time as a wildlife photography volunteer in South Africa.
