14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Sustainable Travel
The coral tree crew
This photo taken while I was working in Key Largo in the Coral Restoration Foundation nursery. They propagate staghorn coral that we outplanted onto the reef in an effort to mitigate some of the destruction that has taken place. I was there with Diving With a Purpose earning my Reef Restoration certification that will be put to use doing restoration work in St Croix, USVI. The Nature Conservancy runs a great program there and needs instructors to help teach volunteers how to restore our reefs. In terms of sustainable travel, it doesn't get any better than this for me. It combines teaching, my love of the ocean and diving with preventing the complete decimation of the reefs through developing practices that can be implemented globally.
