22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Drone/Aerial
The craters

The drone photograph of the craters in Landmannalaugar was a testament to both the challenging conditions and the stunning beauty of Iceland’s highlands. Despite the hurdles, the effort was more than worth it. The craters, with their multi-hued volcanic rock and otherworldly formations, created one of the most awe-inspiring landscapes I’ve ever encountered. Seen from the drone's vantage point, the craters revealed intricate patterns and vivid colors that ranged from deep reds and browns to shades of green and yellow. The contrast between the raw, rugged terrain and the moody sky above added to the surreal atmosphere of the scene. This aerial perspective truly captured the grandeur and unique beauty of Landmannalaugar, making the moment feel as though I was gazing upon a different planet entirely.
