The Cricified Tree
Burning trunk of an olive tree in the Southern Salento countryside, Italy, July 2020. This tree, which appears to be begging for help after having its heart pierced, was infected, like many others, with the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa, which has been killing millions of olive trees in southeastern Italy since 2013.
