23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Wildlife
The curious Arctic Wolf
While camping in the High Arctic of Ellesmere Island in April, I encountered 17 Arctic wolves in 3 packs. This wolf is from the Eureka area that is known for wildlife such as these Arctic Wolves, Muscox, Polar Bears and Arctic Foxes. Due to the lack of hunting in these remote areas, the wolves are curious to engage with humans. This particular wolf pack leader proceeded to approach without fear. Only I had the fear as I was one of the less than 150 people who have ever visited these wolves in their incredibly harsh environment.
