17th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
The Dark Skies of Utah

Utah is home to some of the darkest skies left in the United States. The image was taken in the Grand Staircase-Escalante area. It is so dark there, that there is no artificial light on the horizon! Just the beautiful stars overhead - and a ton of really fantastic and out-of-this world looking rock sculptures! We used a light to light the rock up to give it some definition.
